National Junior Honor Society

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is the nation's premier organization recognizing outstanding middle school students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS honors those students who excel in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character and Citizenship for NJHS. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929.

To be eligible for membership consideration, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75. Student grade point averages are calculated by guidance after all applications are submitted. Members must meet high standards of leadership, service, citizenship, and character. Students are invited to complete an application form to be considered for membership.

The Faculty Council, consisting of five members of the faculty chosen by the principal, reviews each application for these criteria:

  • Activities/Citizenship – At least one in school and one out of school activity in which you have participated while at Springer. These might include clubs, teams, musical groups, or other organizations.
  • Leadership - At least one position either elected or appointed OR membership in a leadership group such as Leader Corps.
  • Service – One or more service activities totaling five or more hours of service. Service may be performed in conjunction with one of the above. Include any volunteer community service hours.

When considering a student, their character is looked at in terms of integrity, behavior, ethics, and cooperation with peers and faculty members. Any student who has had an in or out-of-school suspension or served Time Out cannot be a member. If you have served in multiple detentions, you will not be eligible for membership.

Once selected for membership, members must continue to demonstrate these qualities. Members are also required to attend one meeting a month during the school year and satisfy service hours specifically related to the NJHS.

Membership in NJHS does not guarantee membership in NHS at the high school level.
